Moisey Naumovich Gutkin - Director of the Orchestra

Moisey Naumovich Gutkin was born on 21 August 1936 in Leningrad. In 1960, he graduated from the Saint Petersburg Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, where he studied under Professor Grigory Zaharovich Eremkin in the department of bassoon. Professor Eremkin was himself a bassoon soloist of the Saint Petersburg Philarmonia Orchestra under Evgeni Mravinsky.
Starting in 1960, Moisey Naumovich joined as a bassoonist the orchestra of the Modest Musorgsky Opera and Ballet Theatre (formerly and now currently known as The Imperial Mikhalovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre). In 1969 Moisey Naumovich joined the Saint Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, then under the direction of Yury Temirkanov.
Concurrent with his tenure as an orchestra musician, starting in 2000 Moisey Naumovich also has held the title of the Director of the Orchestra, where he acts as the operational executive of the SPBSO.
For his achievements in the development of cultural awareness, Moisey Naumovich was granted the national title of Honored Activist for Culture ("Zaslujenni Deyatel Kulturi"). He will celebrate his 40th anniversary in tenure as a bassoonist and double bassoonist in 2009.

Moisey Naumovich recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife Larisa Stoliarova. He has two grand daughters, Assia (age 13) and Deborah (age 6). He is an ardent proponent of water tourism, and great enthusiast of baidarka sailing. His granddaughters live in Israel, but specially come to Russia to sail on the river Vyoksa in Karelia and among the Lake Ladoga Skerries with their grandfather, who introduced them to this sport himself.
